One of the problems with discovering Utopia is that no one can seem to agree on what it is. Some people think that Utopia looks like this:
But to others, Utopia looks more like this:
Over the course of this semester, we will be exploring many different visions of Utopia, and adding a few of our own thoughts into the mix. By the end of the semester, will we be any closer to discovering Utopia? Perhaps not. But we will certainly have learned a lot about our society and ourselves along the way.

Sheepishly, belatedly, giving credit where credit is due on the photos I used here:
ReplyDelete1) Cool urban utopia image was found on Craig White's Utopia syllabus. Wish I knew where it came from originally! http://coursesite.uhcl.edu/HSH/Whitec/LITR/5439utopia/default.htm
2) Image of New Harmony (a Utopian community in 19th century Indiana) is available through Wikimedia Commons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:New_Harmony_by_F._Bate_(View_of_a_Community,_as_proposed_by_Robert_Owen)_printed_1838.jpg
Now, go forth and cite YOUR images henceforth! ;-)
I agree Dr. Mitchell-Buck, I believe that there a various differing ideas about what a utopia would look like. Utopia's in my opinon, start at the individual then trangress towards communtiy. No matter what everyones ideas are about what a utopia looks like, one thing is for sure, it would definetly be a better place!
